According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, the Ottawa Senators have offered Tkachuk an 8-year contract for a total of $64 million. Tkachuk is just 22 years old and the contract offer might come with a letter on his chest. Tkachuk would be the perfect captain for the young Sens and is quickly approaching the prime of his career. One might wonder if this is too much money for Tkachuk as his career best season saw him record 45 points as a rookie. In the following two seasons, he has put up 44 and 36 points respectively.
Tkachuk needs to improve his finishing ability to become one of the best goal scorers in the league as his career best season saw him score 22 goals. A big positive for Sens fans is that Tkachuk finished second to Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs in shots on goal in the 2020-2021 season. Tkachuk has finished in the top-5 in shots on goal in all three of his seasons in the National Hockey League. Tkachuk is a unique player because he is also very physical and once again he finished near the top of that category with 248 hits. He was just two hits behind the league leader, Radko Gudas of the Florida Panthers. Tkachuk finished second to Ryan Reaves in his second season with Ottawa as well.
The Senators will try to build on a season where they finished sixth in the North or Canada division. The biggest challenge for them will be being in a division with Tampa Bay, Boston, Toronto, Florida and Montreal.
