Solo journaling games are a remarkable way to get into creative writing, or just introspection and journaling in general.
They provide an excellent base to ‘eek’ out all of your thoughts onto paper, into a digital document, or for those who may not take to writing, you might like speaking your thoughts aloud to whatever recording device or software you desire.
Itch.io is generally where I’ve found my start, and it’s because of TikTok and friends that I found out about this niche form of creativity in the first place.
A friend suggested that we take a look at a type of game that he found on TikTok, explored by a creator in hard copy, the game was meant for multiple people, but sent me down a rabbit hole on their account.
As someone who has found a love for roleplay, journaling, creative writing and the like, this seemed like the perfect alternative to collaborative writing, especially when no partner for such an endeavor could be found.
Most games go for under $10, especially if they are meant to be played alone or as a simple and short experience, but they are well worth the price for the love and foundation the authors have provided for their work.
Creativity flourishes on limitations. Often times when I’ve been stuck on what to create, I look to challenges others have set, and that spurs me onward to look for new ways to overcome, bamboozle and generally play devil’s advocate to whatever has been set in front of me.
If you’re looking for a fun and easy night in to do something creative, I implore you to look to these amazing creators. Most games only require a six sided die, a deck of cards, or maybe a trinket or two.
