Exam week is approaching and for many, it is a new experience. If you’re unsure how to prepare for your exams, here are a few helpful tips to get you ready!
Find a good study spot.
Some people can focus in a quiet library, where others can focus better in a busy café. The only place you should not study is in your bed, as it can decrease productivity and can have a negative effect on your sleep cycle. Wherever you choose to study, make sure it’s a place where you can focus and avoid distractions.
Read and review often.
We can forget up to 70 per cent of what we learn within 24 hours, so going over your notes the day after your class will help increase retention and improve memory skills. When taking notes, summarize the important parts to avoid rereading the chapters and bookmark the parts you find difficult to revisit.
Test your own knowledge.
Once you start to remember the material and feel prepared, create a practice test and quiz yourself. This can help you understand the material and help guide you towards the topics you need to spend more time studying.
Take breaks when needed.
Taking breaks throughout your study sessions allows your body to recharge. This is a great time to stand up, move around and drink some water. Exercising helps improve blood flow to the brain and it can improve your energy and comprehension skills. Going for a small walk or doing some yoga can help.
Take care of yourself.
Have a balanced meal of “brain food” like fruits and vegetables. Having protein and healthy fats can help fuel your mind as well. Along with balanced meals, sleep is also very important. Sleeping can strengthen memories and can help link what you are learning to past experiences. Make sure to get plenty of sleep the night before your exam.
These are a few tips. Try different things out while you study to help create a healthy study habit and don’t feel bad if you need to adjust as you go. Everyone studies differently and it will all depend on what works for you. Good luck on your exams!
